NEW FOR 2018!
MONDAY LIGHTHOUSE SPECIAL!
This trip is guaranteed to go every Monday in July and August!
We’ve teamed up with the Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior (CLLS) to offer this great new adventure! Join us on this exciting all-inclusive Monday Lighthouse Special Porphyry Island Tour. This trip includes a thrilling Zodiac ride; a guided interpretive tour of the island, lighthouse station, museum, and art gallery; a delicious shore lunch and your CLLS membership. If you already have a membership, show it to us at departure and we will refund your $20.00
WHERE YOUR ADVENTURE TAKES YOU
This Monday Lighthouse Special takes you to a picturesque and historic site. Located east of the city, across the Bay of Thunder and around the other side of the Sleeping Giant, is Porphyry Island. The Island boasts unique geology and flora such as devil’s club and arctic plant species. Porphyry Island is also home to the second Canadian lighthouse built on Lake Superior (1873).
THE ZODIAC RIDE
Experience the crystal clear waters and magnificent vistas of the world’s largest freshwater lake. This Monday Lighthouse Special begins with a thrilling 1.5 hour Zodiac ride out past the Welcome Islands and Pie Island and under the cliffs of the Sleeping Giant that tower 1200 feet above the water. The Sleeping Giant is an icon and mascot to Thunder Bay. The Giant resembles a large person lying on their back, toes extended and arms folded across the chest.
When the waves and wind kick up you will get to feel the spray of the crystal clear waters. Each passenger over 110 lbs. is provided with a Canadian approved full-length Mustang™ flotation suit for safety and comfort. It will keep you dry and warm on your adventure. Sizes range from M to XXXL. Passengers under 110 lbs. will be provided with a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).
You may also get to experience riding up and down the waves or cruising at high speeds on top of them. This is thrilling but can also be physically demanding. Sorry, but we are unable to accommodate children under eight (8) years of age or under 4’6″ on the Monday Lighthouse Special. Sail Superior does not recommend Zodiac travel for expectant mothers, people in frail health, or those with neck or back concerns. Instead, we recommend one of our unique and scenic Harbour Sailing Tours or our Big Lake Adventures by sailboat.
VISIT PORPHYRY ISLAND
Embark on a Porphyry Island Tour. You can take an interpretive tour of the Porphyry Island lighthouse, first established in 1873, explore the forest trails and hidden relics or walk the beautiful beaches and weathered rocky shoreline. The recently refurbished lighthouse keeper’s residence is now available for overnight accommodation as well. Here is a direct link to the lighthouse organization that manages the grounds and buildings “Go to the lighthouse“. We take you there and they take care of you!
We will zip back across the bay where you will get to enjoy Thunder Bay from a different vantage point. The best views of the city are from the water! Finish off your Porphyry Island Tour by cruising around the manmade break wall, and back to Pier 3.
Each excursion is unique. Lake Superior always has something to say about what you will see and which direction you will take.
WHAT TO BRING ON YOUR ADVENTURE

We provide potable water on board for those of you who can’t quench your thirst for adventure.
WHAT IS A ZODIAC?
“Zodiac” is a trade name for a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) or Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB). Constructed with sides and bow made of flexible tubes containing air, a floor typically made of rigid aluminum sheets, and often outfitted with outboard engines, these boats are fast, lightweight, durable and incredibly seaworthy. Canadian forces and most militaries around the world use Zodiacs on their missions.
