WHERE YOUR ADVENTURE TAKES YOU
This Sleeping Giant Hike and Speedboat Tour takes you on an unforgettable big lake adventure! Located about 13 Nautical Miles east of the city out across the Bay of Thunder Bay lies the Sleeping Giant. It is the large landmass at the end of the Sibley Peninsula. The Sleeping Giant is an icon and mascot to Thunder Bay. It resembles an extraordinarily large person lying on their back, toes extended and arms folded across the chest.
Known as Nanabijou to the local Anishinaabe, this giant was turned to stone when the secret location of the old silver mine now known as Silver Islet was disclosed to the white men. As another legend has it, the giant was turned to stone in punishment for sinking the white men’s boat and drowning them to keep the silver mine safe. The Sibley Peninsula contains a unique red sandstone sedimentary rock formation that dates back 1.5 billion years. There is a migratory bird observatory open to visitation at Thunder Cape, the very tip of the Sibley Peninsula. Trails up to the top of the Giant offer spectacular views of the surrounding area and Lake Superior.
THE ZODIAC RIDE
Experience the crystal clear waters and magnificent vistas of the world’s largest freshwater lake. This Sleeping Giant Hike and Speedboat Tour begins with a thrilling 45 minute to 1 hour Zodiac ride out past the Welcome Islands to Sawyers Bay located behind the Giant’s head. When the waves and wind kick up you will get to feel the spray of the crystal clear waters. That is why we provide you with a full weather protection suit. It will keep you dry and warm on your adventure.
You may also get to experience riding up and down the waves or cruising at high speeds on top of them. Because the waves and wind can make for an exciting Zodiac ride, children under the age of 10 or under 4’6″ are not allowed on this Sleeping Giant Hike and Speedboat Tour. For the same reasons, Sail Superior does not recommend Zodiac travel for expectant mothers, people in frail health, or those with neck or back concerns. Instead, we recommend one of our unique and scenic Harbour Sailing Tours or our Big Lake Adventures.
You will begin your hike once we’ve settled into the protected and picturesque Sawyers Bay. You will hike through the lush and pristine boreal forest. Sleeping Giant is a protected Provincial Park and you may glimpse some of the abundant wildlife during your hike. The hike up the giant will take you about 60-90+ min each way. The trail to the Head is considered an extreme trail (2.5 hrs return) and the trail to the Chest is considered moderate to advanced (3 hrs return). Work your way up to the top of the high cliffs. 1000 feet up you will view the expanse of Lake Superior’s open water. Standing on this exposed cliff, surrounded by lush forest and overlooking the azure waters will be an unforgettable experience!
Take a quick dip in the lake and a sunbathing session on the cobblestone beach after finishing your hike. We will zip back across the bay where you will get to enjoy Thunder Bay from a different vantage point. The best views of the city are from the water! Finish off by cruising around the manmade break wall, and back to Pier 3.
Each Sleeping Giant Hike and Speedboat Tour is unique, as Lake Superior always has something to say about what you will see and which direction you will take.

What is a Zodiac?
“Zodiac” is a trade name for a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) or Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB). Constructed with sides and bow made of flexible tubes containing air, a floor typically made of rigid aluminum sheets, and often outfitted with outboard engines, these boats are fast, lightweight, durable and incredibly seaworthy. Canadian forces and most militaries around the world use Zodiacs on their missions.
