Thompson Island

Just 14 miles south of Thunder Bay, Thompson Island Provincial Park is a boater’s paradise that offers the dual experience of wilderness and relaxation. On this over night tour, enjoy natural rock beaches, cliff-side views of Lake Superior with hiking trails surrounded by a rich boreal forest. A spacious dock, fire pit and barbecue area, as well as an authentic Scandinavian sauna to compliment your stay. The west side of the island is particularly spectacular at dusk, where the vast Lake Superior stretches out to meet the sunset.

Experience the crystal clear waters and magnificent vistas of the world’s largest freshwater lake. Embark on a two or three day adventure, sail to the Welcome Islands, hike the Sleeping Giant, photograph local island lighthouses, and then cap your day with a traditional Finnish sauna at Thompson Island. When night falls, snuggle up beside the campfire, light up the BBQ and enjoy the alluring aromas as you sit back, relax and marvel at the breathtaking milky-way twinkling brightly overhead. Each excursion is unique, as Lake Superior always has something to say about what you will see and which direction you will take. Always an abundance of wind for sailing but rarely the same direction or force.
