Take a thrilling 45 minute to 1-hour Zodiac ride out past the Welcome Islands. Skirt Pie Island and glimpse the resident bald eagle at Hare Island. Cruise under the towering 1200 foot cliffs. Land in Sawyers Bay. Hike through the lush and pristine boreal forest. Work your way up to the top of the high cliffs of the Head or Chest. 1000 feet up you will view the expanse of Lake Superior’s open water. An unforgettable experience!

 

You will begin your hike once we’ve settled into the protected and picturesque Sawyers Bay. You will hike through the lush and pristine boreal forest. Glimpse some of the abundant wildlife during your hike. The hike up the giant will take you about 60-90+ min each way. The trail to the Head is considered an extreme trail (2.5 hrs return) and the trail to the Chest is considered moderate to advanced (3 hrs return). Work your way up to the top of the high cliffs. 1000 feet up you will view the expanse of Lake Superior’s open water. Standing on this exposed cliff, surrounded by lush forest and overlooking the azure waters will be an unforgettable experience! Finish it off with a quick dip in the lake and a sunbathing session on the warm pebble beach before setting off on the exciting trip back to the Marina.

 

Each Sleeping Giant Hike and Speedboat Tour is unique, as Lake Superior always has something to say about what you will see and which direction you will take.

Activity Breakdown

Hiking on moderate, advanced and expert trails. transferring from Zodiac to small shuttle dinghy or a 10 minute walk in the lake in water up to your knees. Sorry, but we are unable to accommodate children under eight (8) years of age or under 4’6″. Pregnant woman, people with neck/back injuries, are advised not to take this tour.

Q: What do I need to bring?

A: We recommend you bring a

  • Windbreaker (winds on the shores of Lake Superior lower the temperature by 5 degrees)
  • Camera

  • Please bring comfortable and trail tested hiking footwear

Q: Is being a passenger a difficult task?

A: Absolutely not! Our excellent captains will make sure you have an easy trip. However, some of our trips require some physical activity on your end to keep your trip enjoyable and this will be listed under activity level.

 

Q: Should I bring food?

A: On the very short trips we don’t recommend food as the trip is too thrilling for food.

For our day trips, we definitely recommend bringing food if it is not catered

 

Q: Can I get a refund?

A: All reservations cancelled at least two full weeks prior to the scheduled trip date are refunded 85% of fare (15% administration fee). If a reservation is cancelled within two weeks of scheduled trip date, there is NO REFUND.

If WE cancel a trip due to weather or any other conditions, you will receive a FULL REFUND of all fares. Once a charter begins there will be no refunds unless due to the inability of Sail Superior to continue the reserved charter.

Q: Can I tip my Captain?

A: Yes. Our Captains work hard to deliver a fun, memorable and safe experience. If you would like to tip them they will kindly accept and appreciate it.

Safety is paramount to everything we do. With over 15 years of experience in the industry, we know what we’re doing, and we have thorough procedures in place to ensure your well-being.

 

Our boats are outfitted with safety equipment meeting or exceeding Transport Canada and Industry Standards and our captains and crew are expertly trained.

 

If you are participating in a Big Lake Adventure tell your crew if you have high or low blood pressure, heart conditions, epilepsy, broken or fractured bones/dislocations, fragile skin, neurological disorders, diabetes, asthma, prosthetics, panic/anxiety attacks or any recent sprains/muscular injuries.

 

To maintain our high standards of safety, children must be at least 142 cm (4’6″) tall for our zodiac tours. Zodiac trips are not suitable for pregnant women or those with serious back and neck problems. Please let us know of any such conditions at the time of booking and we can recommend a more suitable option.

This tour requires a minimum of 6 passengers. We will notify you 24 hrs in advance of your scheduled departure time if the minimum passenger threshold has not been reached, and a full refund or raincheck will be issued.

 

Tour Restrictions

We are unable to accommodate children under eight (8) years of age or under 4’6″. Sail Superior does not recommend Zodiac travel for expectant mothers, people in frail health, or those with neck or back concerns.
