Ash Spreading Ash Scattering Policy

Please note: This service is offered by private charter departing from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

We understand that many guests wish to honour their loved ones by spreading their ashes onto the water. To ensure this process is respectful, safe, and environmentally responsible, we have established the following guidelines:

  1. Weather Conditions: Weather Conditions: Weather and wind conditions must be suitable for ash spreading. If conditions are too windy, the biodegradable urn or container may need to be placed into the water unopened. The captain will use their discretion to determine whether conditions are suitable and what procedure is safest.
  2. Containers: Only biodegradable, water-soluble containers are permitted. No plastic, metal, glass, or other non-biodegradable materials are allowed.
  3. Floral Arrangements: Flowers are acceptable only if they are natural and free of bands, tape, wire, foam, plastic, or other artificial materials.
  4. Fire Safety: No fire, candles, incense, or open flames of any kind are allowed during the ceremony.
  5. Location: All ash spreading ceremonies take place on the far, lake side of the Thunder Bay main breakwater, outside the harbour, to provide greater privacy and respect for you, other boaters, and other lake users.
  6. Charter Requirement: Ash spreading ceremonies must be booked as a private charter to allow for a respectful and private ceremony. Ash spreading is not permitted on public tours.
  7. Notification: Advance notice is not required when booking. However, please notify the captain at the start of the charter that you wish to spread ashes.
