ISPA Introduction to Sailing
10 hours of fun filled on the water training. No books, no tests, no homework. This course is for the beginner, anyone who just wants to see if sailing is for them. We supply everything, life jackets, sailing gloves (to keep), boats, great instructors and an ISPA logbook. Delivered over two days, this course introduces you to all the systems of a sailboat, teaches crew recovery, boat safety and will have you sailing as skipper under supervision by the end of the 10 hours.
If you enjoy sailing and want to continue learning, you can use your 10 hours towards your first ISPA certification course, the Competent Crew Course. OR join our Monday Night Clinic (see below) and sail all summer long. 35+ hours..
Minimum 3 students required for sailing school to run. If a given date has less than 3 students we will work with you to find a different class.

12 Mondays, 28 hours of sailing plus an 8-10 hour season end sail to Thompson Island or Sawyers Bay (Hike the Giant), or an offshore race. This is for all students of the basic sail course and other intermediate sailors that want to join like minded folk to learn and enjoy time on the water. This is a hands on clinic. We race, we cruise, we learn, and you do the sailing. 8 participant spots only. If you have completed basic sail, you can use these training hours to complete the competent crew level. * We know you probably can’t make every Monday so by a book of 8 open dates and use them on any of the 12 dates we sail. Dates subject to weather and bareboat charter interruptions.

Lake Superior to Lake Huron Interlake Live-Aboard Adventure!
Sail and experience the beauty of Lake Superior – the Everest of fresh water sailing. Travel into Lake Huron and the North Channel. Have the adventure of a lifetime on this 14 night and 14 day Cruise & Learn trip. Bringing new and moderately experienced sailors up to the first four levels of the ISPA syllabus: Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Navigation and Coastal Skipper. Getting you ready to command your own sailboat or charter worldwide. This Excursion is an all-inclusive live-aboard instructional holiday with generous provisions, study materials, logbook, instruction included. Beginning from Thunder Bay, we head to Tee Harbour, easterly to Porphyry island, on to Loon Harbour, Otter Cove, Battle island, Rossport, Slate islands and then the first long haul to Québec Harbour on Michipicoten island. We then travel south to St Marry’s river, Sault Ste Marie Lock through to lower St Marry’s river. Continue on to Lake Huron and up into the North Channel. Stopping at Little Current then round Manitoulin island to Tobermory. Resupply and head back to The Lakehead. On the way back we challenge ourselves with some long open water passages. 250 NM in one shot! A relaxing Thompson Island traditional woodfire sauna will be waiting for you after the Trans-Superior crossing! This is a serious sailing trip averaging at least 8 hours of sailing per day with numerous overnight non-stop sailing watches. *price based on 5 students with a couple sharing forward berth. 1/2 hour theory and 2 hours of practice with an ISPA instructor in the art of docking with different wind and dock configurations. This course is for new boat owners and or the skipper who thinks it’s the crew’s fault when they hit the dock or other boats… Maximum of two students per course. Have your own boat? Let an ISPA instructor teach you on your own boat: $75/hr (minimum two hours of instruction).

The Competent Crew Course is the first in a comprehensive building block series that allows you to learn at your own pace and gain ISPA Certification recognized worldwide. This is a certification level course. This course will give you the basic knowledge essentials for keelboat sailing and must-knows for living aboard a cruising sailboat. You will have the knowledge requirements to:
- Live aboard a sailing vessel in tidal waters as Competent Crew.
- In an emergency, be able to substitute as skipper.
- Sail a vessel under 30 ft (where no navigational hazards exist, within 5 miles of a safe harbor, during daylight hours only, in light to moderate wind conditions.)
This course is 20 hours of do it yourself at home theory, instructor evaluated and an online test. Followed by 20 sailing hours of hands-on instruction. It can be taken entirely in the Bay of Thunder Bay over a number of weekdays or weekends. If that is the case provisions will not be provided. It can also be taken as a private multi day overnight excursion where provisions will be provided. The course workbook and logbook will be provided. If you are continuing on from our Basic Sail course, the cost is $395.00. Take advantage of our couples price – $639.00 each. No prerequisites required.

Day Skipper Sail is the second course in a comprehensive building block series that allows you to learn at your own pace and gain ISPA Certification recognized worldwide. Day Skipper Sail provides intermediate sailing and cruising knowledge essentials for the bareboat charter skipper.
- Act as the skipper of a live aboard sailing vessel
- Be responsible for the safety of his/her vessel and crew (while day sailing in familiar waters, within 10 miles of safe harbor, during daylight, in moderate wind and sea conditions using basic navigational skills.)
The course involves 20 hours of do it yourself at home theory, instructor reviewed. Followed by 20 sailing hours of hands-on instruction. Requires prior completion of Competent Crew course. This is a Friday (5:30 pm) through Sunday (4:30 pm) intense live-aboard Day Skipper course. We do the Spar channel, overnight at Thompson and practice anchoring in Dawson Bay. This course is all-inclusive (meals, workbooks and logbooks, onboard accommodations). Minimum of four students required for the course to run. Prerequisite – Competent Crew.

10-15 hours of do it yourself at home theory including navigation and chart work verified and corrected by an ISPA instructor. Followed by 20 hours of hands-on instruction. Coastal Navigation has no prerequisite and may be taken at any time. Great for any boater who wants to venture a little further offshore with confidence. If this course is taken as a stand-alone, it will be a two-day sail navigating from Thunder Bay through Spar Channel to Thompson Island. Overnight at Thompson Island. The return will be along the south side of Pie Island around Angus Island through the gap in A & B Welcome Islands and back to the harbour. This course can be combined with the Day Skipper course by adding one day on to the trip. The route will be: Spar Channel to Thompson Island. Overnight at Thompson Island. The next day we will take the south side of Pie Island, through the Angus gap to Sawyers Bay. Second overnight in Sawyers Bay. Return the final day through the Welcome Island gap to the marina. Prerequisite – Day Skipper.
