Sailing Instruction

We offer a variety of courses starting with our 10 hour basic introduction class to the week long CRUISE & LEARN sailing certification holiday.

Sleeping Giant Sailing School will be instructing adults in the art of sailing using our 40′ ocean capable sailboat. ISPA certification courses will get you ready to sail your own boat on the Great Lakes or charter bareboat in the Caribbean or worldwide. Competent Crew, Day Skipper and Coastal Navigation will all be taught on Lake Superior. Cruise and Learn Lake Superior courses will be live-aboard sailing holidays visiting Thompson Island, Loon Harbour, Silver Islet, Black Bay, Nipigon Bay, Red Rock, Rossport, Isle Royale and the Slate Islands.

2017 Course Schedule

Basic Sailing Lessons $295.00. (ISPA Introduction to Sailing) 10 hours of fun filled on the water training. No books, no tests, no homework. This course is for the beginner, anyone who just wants to see if sailing is for them. We supply everything, life jackets, sailing gloves, boats, great instructors and an ISPA logbook. Delivered over two days, this course introduces you to all the systems of a sail boat, teaches crew recovery, boat safety and will have you sailing as skipper under supervision by the end of the 10 hours. If you like sailing and want to continue learning, you can use your 10 hours towards your next ISPA certification course, the Competent Crew.
These courses fill in order of listing unless you have three participants. IE course #1 fills then #2 is made available.  Five students max. per course.

Docking Endorsement $175.00/student.  1/2 hour theory and 2 hours of practice with an ISPA instructor in the art of docking with different wind and dock configurations. This course is for new boat owners and or the skipper who thinks it’s the crew’s fault when they hit the dock or other boat…. Two students only per course. Or have an ISPA instructor teach you on your own boat. $75/hr minimum two hours.

Competent Crew (2nd half) $349.00 (a continuation from Basic Sail) – 10 more hours of practical, 20 hrs theory. A certification course!

Designed for those of you who love sailing, yet haven’t made the jump to owning your own boat. This is not a beginner course, it is for sailors that have at least the basics and want to practice and refresh their skills.

Practice, learn and have fun with like minded sailors.

This Excursion is an all inclusive live-aboard instructional holiday with generous provisions, study materials, logbook, instruction included. Certification by qualified ISPA instructors.

Sailing Destinations

(A) Beginning from Thunder Bay, Pie Island, Thompson Island, Otter Cove, Loon Harbour, Nipigon Red Rock. And if the conditions permit Rossport and the Slate Islands.
(B) Circumnavigation of Isle Royale.*  (Minimum 4 students to run C&L courses.)

LAKE SUPERIOR CIRCUMNAVIGATION CRUISE & LEARN – LEVELS 1 THROUGH 4   | $3500-$4150.00  |  14 DAY LIVE ABOARD COURSE

Sail and experience the beauty of Lake Superior – the Everest of fresh water sailing.  A 14 night and 14 day Cruise & Learn adventure. Bringing new and moderately experienced sailors up to the first four levels of the ISPA syllabus Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Navigation and Coastal Skipper. Getting you ready to command your own sailboat or charter worldwide.

This Excursion is an all inclusive live-aboard instructional holiday with generous provisions, study materials, logbook, instruction included. Certification by qualified ISPA instructors. We will be crossing international boundaries, be sure your passport is up to date.

Sailing Destinations

(A) Beginning from Thunder Bay, Pie Island, Thompson Island, south to Grand Marais, Knife River and Duluth, onwards to the Apostle islands and to the upper peninsula of Michigan, cut through the Keweenaw Waterway to Houghton, and on to “the other” Grand Marais. Continue on to Whitefish point pass though the locks and clear customs at the Sault.

Return, via Michipicoten Island and Quebec harbour, head for some open water sailing stopping in the Slate islands ( see a caribou ). Rossport and Red Rock and then on to Porphyry Island lighthouse, Silver Islet and then back to Thunder Bay.  A cool 800 N Miles. Probably 1000 by the time you are all said and done.

(B) Go the other way… It’s still 1000 Miles.

This is a serious sailing trip averaging at least 8 hours of sailing per day with numerous overnight non-stop sailing watches.

COURSE MATERIALS

Log books and course books are included in all but the docking endorsement class.  Extra books can be purchased for: Books level 1-5, $40.00 + HST. Log book  $25.00 + HST.

13% HST not included in above prices.
